Day 131: Speedlight practice

Today I was just practicing with my speedlight and the different settings, so I wasn’t really focused on taking any good photos.  Most of them are bad, but I did get a couple that were okay.  I decided to explore some black and white conversions to see what I could come up with.  I did some serious modification on Nelly Nero’s Cynic action and came up with these.

This particular photo had a blown background (window) because I was metering on Charlotte.  No matter what I did the background sort of looked fake.  I cropped this as well to make her eyes fall on a rule of thirds line.  I had limb chopped her elbows when I took the photo, but I still don’t think the cut off body parts bother me here.  I think I figured out that when I follow a composition rule, like rule of thirds and don’t crop right at a joint (like the wrist, knee, elbow, etc) then I don’t mind a limb chop.  I’m not sure I love the conversion to b&w here, but it feels a little more grungy and magazine like, which is a little out of my comfort zone when it comes to editing.  (Charlotte has learned to laugh like this from our friend Che who was here back in March.  So silly.)

I like the conversion on this photo a little better.  Maybe because there is more interst in the background.  The setting sun was shining on him and the color photo has beautiful light in it.  (Cooper was tormenting his sister  by screeching at her, but I like that he looks like he is going to fly and has an airplane on his shirt.)

Charlotte's little hand-laugh is adorable.

I, too, like that Cooper looks like he's flying like the plane on his shirt.

I'd be interested to know if you plan on using any of your pictures as decor in your house. I've seen some neat examples of simple, yet stunning, collages of large prints of family members.
